How Stipends & Buyouts Work

There is $6,000 budgeted per instructor, per course. (If a course is taught a second time, $5,000 is allocated.) Instructors have two choices:

1. The bulk of the money is used for a hire-behind/course buyout and is paid directly to the institution to cover one of the instructor’s usual courses during that semester. The amount paid is determined by the home institution’s standard adjunct payment schedule, in consultation with COPLAC. In this case the COPLACDigital instructor will receive $2,000 course development money at the end of the semester they teach. The instructor must submit a W9 form to Claire Bailey (bailey@coplac.org) and is responsible for claiming the miscellaneous income on taxes; the COPLAC office will issue a 1099-MISC to the instructor for that purpose.

OR

2. The Digital Liberal Arts course is taught as an overload, and $6,000 is paid directly to the instructor as compensation. In this case the COPLACDigital instructor will receive the $6,000 course compensation at the end of the semester they teach. The instructor must submit a W9 form to Claire Bailey (bailey@coplac.org) and is responsible for claiming the miscellaneous income on taxes; the COPLAC office will issue a 1099-MISC to the instructor for that purpose.

It is not necessary for co-teachers to choose the same option: each individual decides his/her preference. If a course is taught a second time under the grant, the instructor does not have to follow that same option again, but can choose at the time of teaching.
